April 20 – pre-registration is required!

Each Sarana participant receives a Homyo, a Buddhist name that is unique and specific to your character and attributes. Each Buddhist name will begin with the term Shaku. This is in reference to Shakyamuni Buddha who was a
muni (sage) of the Shakya clan, his extended family.

As this service must be conducted by the Socho, the spiritual head of Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temples of Canada, in Calgary we have only held these on irregular occasions when there are adequate numbers as he must take time off from his regular duties at the headquarters in Vancouver and travel to Calgary.

If this is a ceremony that you would be interested in participating in, and you have been a member of the Calgary Buddhist Temple for a minimum of one year, or you have further questions, please send an email indicating your interest to calgarybuddhisttemple@gmail.com

Honouring all Ancestors – Obon is a time to express our gratitude to loved ones who have passed on before us. Without them, we would not be who we are today, due to the basic tenet of interdependence. We would not be where we are and we would not be able to do the things we do to enjoy life. Just think about the number of people involved in creating each of us. If we go back just thirty generations, we can calculate that there were over two billion parents, starting with our two parents, their four parents, and so on—and that’s just the physical part.

Schedule for cemetery visits:
TO BE ANNOUNCED

Obon Temple Service is at 3:00pm with potluck to follow. Please bring a dish to create a wonderful Obon meal! (Our super senior members are NOT expected to bring anything!)

Everyone is welcome to attend this special service of gratitude.

Start: August 18, 2019 3:00 pm
End: August 18, 2019 4:30 pm
