YOUTH TOUR TO JAPAN

July 10th – July 25th, 2009

The 2009 Hongwanji Cultural Youth Exchange in Japan dates have been tentatively set and will take place from approximately July 10 to July 25.  It is tentative as we await for confirmation of flight schedules to and from Japan around this time.

This is an excellent opportunity for youths from across Canada to visit the homeland of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, to learn and experience the culture and history of our Jodo Shinshu tradition. As well, the youths who are selected will get to know youths from not only Japan, but also from Brazil, Hawaii, and the USA as representatives from each of the Overseas Districts will have youths representing them for this program. Please keep in mind that from Canada we will be selecting ten youths, who will not only be participants, but will be ambassadors representing the JSBTC.

The trip will comprise of two parts, the first will be just the Canadian group on our own, and the second part will be organized through the Hongwanji (July 13 – 21). During the portion of the program set by Hongwanji, the youths will participate in tours to Kyoto, Hiroshima and possibly other destinations (I am still waiting for their schedule). As well, there will be activities at the Hongwanji, including lectures, tours and other events. Participants will also experience a home stay with a host family (I have yet to hear where that is to take place). Opportunity will be afforded for those youths who wish to receive confirmation rites by Gomonshu-sama.

The tour is open to youth between the ages of 15 and 25. We would like participants to submit the completed application forms to the local Minister by no later than April 15th, in time for the 2009 JSBTC AGM. Please also note that the youths will be acting as representatives of our Kyodan and must have a referral letter from the local minister as well.
