The 850th Anniversary of Shinran Shonin’s Birth and 800th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Jodo Shinshu Teaching

Early notification of the 2023 joint celebration of the 850th anniversary of Shinran Shonin’s birth and the 800th anniversary of the establishment of the Jodo Shinshu teaching has been received by our Canadian Bishop Tatsuya Aoki who, in turn, distributed the information to JSBTC members.

Bishop Aoki noted: “Traditionally, overseas participants are combining the attendance to the service in conjunction with the World Women’s Convention which is scheduled on May 11th and May 12th, 2023 in Kyoto.”

In his note, Bishop Aoki said the Women’s Federation of JSBTC and Rev. Y. Ouchi, the adviser, have been in touch with a Kintetsu Travel agent and possibly Japan Travel Bureau for a group trip to Kyoto.

The Bishop said he did not have information about the Women’s Convention currently, but reported the first registration for the service (not WF convention) is from October to December, 2021, and the second registration is from February to March, 2023. Hongwanji will try to estimate as well as organize the seating capacity for 2023.

He added he will consult with Rev. Grant Ikuta who led the tour in 2012 and Rev. Ouchi who will lead the tour in 2023 so that Canadian attendance can be coordinated. A ministers’ meeting is scheduled in August, at which time he said he can coordinate and plan with the sensei about the celebration and Women’s Convention.

Further information about the celebration and convention will be forthcoming as the time approaches the established dates.

Joint Celebration Commemorative design

The commemorative design features two crests that are embossed over a reddish-brown brocade background. The background pattern consists of pine needles woven within a ginkgo leaf-shaped silhouette. The two crests are comprised of the sagarifuji (hanging wisteria) and tsuru (crane) motifs.

2021 Obon Schedule

Obon is a time to express our gratitude to loved ones who have passed on before us. Without them, we would not be who we are today, due to the basic tenet of interdependence. We would not be where we are and we would not be able to do the things we do to enjoy life. Just think about the number of people involved in creating each of us. If we go back just thirty generations, we can calculate that there were over two billion parents, starting with our two parents, their four parents, and so on—and that’s just the physical part.

RE-OPENING to In-person Attendance – Sunday, Aug 15

Wednesday, June 23, 2021
by

To all Temple friends and members:

We are pleased to announce the re-opening of our Temple doors to in-person attendance on Sunday, August 15.

As the Alberta government has lifted restrictions on indoor gatherings, we wanted to inform you of how in-person services will proceed, so that you can determine if attending service in-person is within your comfort zone.

  1. Face masks are optional but appreciated. We will have single-use face masks available at the door.
  2. Capacity limits have been lifted.
  3. Chanting – anyone wanting to chant out loud must wear a mask. Those who would prefer to distance themselves from people chanting aloud can sit in the mezzanine. The mezzanine will be a silent chanting zone.
  4. Each person attending will be asked to register online. We will be using a Signup Genius signup form.
  5. Temple washrooms will be available for emergency only.
  6. Please do not attend if you are experiencing any Covid-19 symptoms.

Here is a link to the August 15 signup sheet:

The live-streaming of the services on Facebook will continue, so if you are not comfortable/or unable to attend in-person, this will continue to be an option.

Our temple re-opening is an evolving process. We appreciate any feedback you may have to offer.

It’s All in Your Gut!

Thursday, September 16th, 2021 at 7pm MDT

Hippocrates, the ancient Greek doctor known as the father of medicine, is claimed to have said: All disease begins in the gut”. In our modern world, many health practitioners now believe that a healthy gut is critical to good health. Fixing the gut can help prevent and treat common gastrointestinal issues such as stomach aches, gas, bloating and constipation. At a deeper level, repairing the gut can treat and even resolve complex chronic diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), autoimmune diseases, diabetes and heart disease.

Trudy GahlingerIn this 90 minute workshop, we will explore the fascinating world of the gut microbiome: the bacteria and other microbes that live in our gut and help us to digest food, synthesize vitamins, and fight off infection. We’ll discuss the healthy foods and lifestyle behaviours that promote optimal gut health, as well as the gut-busting factors in our environment. The focus will be on effective, inexpensive steps that we can take immediately to start creating better health for our future.

Trudy Gahlinger, a long-time member of the Calgary Buddhist Temple, is a Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach.

The Hidden Messages in Water

Tuesday, May 18, 2021
by

The Calgary Buddhist Temple Sangha Engagement is honored to have Sensei Tanis Moore, of the Manitoba Buddhist Temple, present a thought-provoking workshop on Sunday, August 29 @ 1pm MDT.  This workshop will look at Dr. Masaru Emoto’s research, photos, relationship with Buddhist thought, and the rice experiment, which shows the truth of his message.

Register for this workshop by visiting:  http://bit.ly/water-29Aug21

Dr. Emoto was a Japanese scientist who revolutionized the idea that our thoughts and intentions impact the physical realm.  For over 20 years, until he passed away in 2014, he studied the scientific evidence of how the molecular structure in water transforms when it is exposed to human words, thoughts, sounds and intentions.

Using high speed photography, Dr. Emoto discovered the crystals formed in frozen water are affected by our thoughts, words, and feelings.

Since humans and the earth are composed mostly of water, his findings have far-reaching ramifications for individuals, for human society, and for the global environment.

“Without water, no life has its birth.”

From the Eighfold Path to Happiness (from Seiten):

     2. Right thoughts: to turn our minds away from violence and hatred

     3. Right speech: to refrain from harmful talk and use our words wisely

From Thich Nhat Hanh

“…and the Buddha replied, ‘Yes, we can say that there are Six Elements.’ These are the Four Great Elements (mahabhuta) of earch, water, fire, and air, plus space and consciousness… All physical phenomena are made up of these Sic Elements.”

Our bodies are approximately 60% water, our brain and heart a huge 73% each.  Seventy-one percent of Earth’s surface (mostly seas and oceans), is made up of water.

We all know who important hydration is to our health; it is helpful to realize that the thoughts we infuse into the water we use and share with others can affect us all in so many ways.

Introduction to Naikan

Sunday, April 11, 2021
by

The Calgary Buddhist Temple will be holding an Introduction to Naikan as a means for self-reflection led by our own Rev. Robert Gubenco. Wednesday, June 9 is Day 1, and Day 2 is a follow-up session on Wednesday, June 30. Start time for both is 7pm MST.

The Japanese word nai means inner or inside and the word kan means looking. When these two words are combined Naikan translates as inside looking which refers to looking within as a means of self-reflection. Naikan uses three simple yet structured questions for the purpose of self-reflection. The questions are designed to remove one’s personal feelings and to bring one’s attention or awareness to the reality of the give and take connection that exists in relationships.

If you have an interest in understanding oneself and relationships, please join us!
