Update Regarding In-Person Attendance

Apr 5/26

Dear Dharma Friends,

We hope this finds you well and healthy in the Light of the Dharma.

We are writing to provide an update on the closure of the temple to in-person attendance due to several building safety concerns that required immediate attention which began in late November 2025.

The development of mold in the basement has been professionally addressed and removed to ensure a safe and healthy environment for everyone.

The entire vinyl flooring in the basement was removed and grinded down for future flooring installation. With the completion of the grinding of the basement concrete flooring a thick layer of fine dust developed throughout the entire temple. A cleaning crew was hired and spent three full days cleaning to remove all the dust and dirt accumulated in the temple from the last five months of building remediation.

Although the entire temple was cleaned only the upper floors are ready for occupancy. The bathrooms in the basement have to be put back together and we need to address the concrete flooring in order to not bring dust to the upper levels. Lots of work is still to be done in the basement but first we must address the source of water entering the basement.

With the washrooms not available in the basement, we will all share the bathroom that is on the main level in the office.

In February the ceiling panels in the Main Hall (Hondo) were thoroughly checked and secured.

Because of the work completed to date, the Temple Board Members have made the decision to open the main floor (Hondo) and the upstairs floor (Boardroom) to in-person attendance. Which means that our first in-person service in 2026 will be next Sunday, April 12th.

We sincerely appreciate your understanding, patience, and continued support during the repairs to the temple.

With gratitude and in gassho,

(Feb 25/26)

Dear Dharma Friends,

We hope this finds you well and healthy in the Light of the Dharma.

We are writing to provide an update on the closure of the temple to in-person attendance due to several building safety concerns that require immediate attention. The water damage that was discovered in the basement has unfortunately led to the development of mold, which must be professionally addressed to ensure a safe and healthy environment for everyone. The latest developments require that the entire vinyl flooring in the basement be removed and further remediation procedures completed. This phase in the process is scheduled to take place on March 4, 2026. We are happy to announce that the ceiling panels in the Main Hall (Hondo) have been thoroughly checked and secured.

Because of these issues, the Temple Board Members have made the difficult but necessary decision to temporarily close the temple until all repairs and remediation work can be fully completed. The safety and well-being of our Sangha is always our highest priority along with a commitment to care for the Temple.

Please be assured that we are actively working with contractors and specialists to resolve these matters as quickly and responsibly as possible. We will keep you informed of our progress and will share updates as soon as we have clearer timelines for reopening.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding, patience, and continued support during this time.

With gratitude and in gassho,

Board Members / Calgary Buddhist Temple

(update Jan 26/26) We are writing to provide an update on the closure of the temple to in-person attendance due to several building safety concerns that require immediate attention. The water damage that was discovered in the basement has unfortunately led to the development of mold, which must be professionally addressed to ensure a safe and healthy environment for everyone. In addition, a ceiling panel in the main hall has come loose, creating a potential safety risk and necessitates checking all the ceiling panels.

Because of these issues, the Temple Board Members have made the difficult but necessary decision to temporarily close the temple until all repairs and remediation work can be fully completed. The safety and well-being of our Sangha is always our highest priority along with a commitment to care for the Temple.

(update Dec 30/25) We are continuing to hold our Sunday Services online while repairs are in progress. Other monthly activities typically held at the temple are canceled or on hold for the time being. We apologize for this interruption in our offering. We are still awaiting confirmation regarding returning to in-person services and we will provide an update as soon as possible.

(update Dec 12/25)The Temple is temporarily closed to in-person attendance and continues with Live Streaming for services. The Calgary Temple Board Members gathered for their monthly meeting yesterday and a top item of discussion was the repairs to the temple. At this point in time, we will be working as soon as possible with the help of contractors to return to in-person occupancy at the temple. Because the Holiday Season is fast approaching we are trying our best to get things completed in a timely manner for the New Year. We appreciate your patience and support during this difficult time and we will continue to provide updates on the progress as we receive them.

With gratitude,

Mindful Lego Builders

Tuesday, November 11, 2025

On Sunday Nov 15, the Dharma Time kids are encouraged to bring something to the temple that they’ve created or made of lego. We’ll set up the lego builds in the hondo to share/display and talk about the creations with the Sangha.

A creative way to show mindfulness plus any adults (or bigger kids) are also invited to bring-in their lego builds too!

Everyone is invited to share in this lego mindfulness experience together!

Let’s Sashiko Together

Sashiko (刺し子), meaning “little stabs,” is a traditional Japanese decorative and functional embroidery technique that uses simple, repeating running stitches to mend, reinforce, and embellish fabric. Historically, it was practiced by rural communities to repair and strengthen clothing and textiles.

Today, sashiko is celebrated as both a practical repair method and a distinct form of decorative art, known for its geometric patterns and meditative process. This is a “do-it-yourself” (self guided) activity to discover or re-discover sashiko as well as take time to enjoy each other’s company before the hustle and bustle of the holidays.

POSTPONED

Different patterns and materials will be available to choose from so we can all work on a project and support each other while we learn as a Sangha.

We gratefully acknowledge support from the Japanese Canadian Legacies Society.

Selfless Giving

Annually, the Temple puts up a tree at the front of the hondo for the collection of toys as well as items of warm clothing for those less fortunate.  This year, the toys will be going to Baby It’s Cold Outside, and warm clothing to the Calgary Drop-In Centre. Let’s show kindness and compassion for others.

  • New, unwrapped gift donations for children ages 0-17; and
  • New or gently used winter weather clothing items such as socks, gloves, coats, etc for all age groups.

Final day is Sunday, Nov 30 – please give generously. Money or gift card donations are welcome and should be given directly to Susan Huntley or Laurie Takeda.

Baby It’s Cold Outside (BCO)

BCO and the Temple are partnering to help bring joy to countless families across the Foothills. The toys collected through your Temple stay within the region and have become cherished surprises, lighting up children’s faces and creating lasting memories for their families.

Thanks to the support of partners, our campaign continues to grow in reach and impact. In 2024 alone, we fed 612 people and ensured 306 children received gifts, a 33% increase in family members supported compared to the previous year. These numbers represent more than just data, they reflect real families, real smiles, and real moments of hope.

Our nomination period runs from November 17 to December 12, and we are honoured to have the Temple involved again this year. To learn more about our mission and the impact of our work, please visit: www.babyitscoldoutsidecharity.com

Our popular and much anticipated Chow Mein Supper held on October 25 was SOLD OUT and a huge success because of you!  Thank you to all the people who supported the Temple by purchasing tickets and to all the wonderful volunteers.  Without your kindness and generosity, we would not be able to do what we do.

Gassho.
