After the Shotsuki/Monthly Memorial Service on Sunday, Aug 4, the Temple will be closed for a summer break and will reopen on Sunday, Sep 7 for morning meditation and service, and will continue the regularly scheduled services/programs.  Thank you for your understanding and support!

will be on the chant Shoshinge (Hymn of True Entrusting Heart).  Shoshinge is the central chanting ritual in Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, composed by the founder Shinran Shonin (1173-1263).  Shinran ShoninIt expresses the essence of Shinran’s understanding of the Pure Land Path and the Nembutsu (Namo Amida Butsu).

AB Jodo Shinshu Golf Tournament

First annual Alberta (AB) joint Lethbridge/Calgary event at the Nanton Golf Course on Saturday, Sep 13.  Join the fun in the format of a Texas Scramble where the team will all tee off and the best shot is selected.  The players all hit from that chosen spot, and this process repeats until the hole is finished.  The teams must use 2 drives per player.

The tee times will begin at 1:18 and continue in 9-minute intervals.  We will have lunch provided for us prior to the round so please come at least an hour and 15 minutes early so you can enjoy lunch.  We will do prizes after the round and try to be out of there as quick as possible so that people can get home at a reasonable time.

The cost is $150.00 per player and $600.00 per team. This includes Lunch, Cart, 18 holes of golf and prizes.

Please submit required information to Lester Ikuta (e-mail is ikuta@telus.net) and e-transfer the funds or contact Lester to make alternate payment arrangements. 

If you would like to sign up as a single or couple let Lester know and we will pair you up.

Sunday Sundae for Sensei

Join the Calgary Buddhist Temple on Sunday after service on Sunday, Sep 21 as we show our sincere appreciation to Sensei Robert Gubenco by holding a delightful Sundae Sunday. After service, we’ll have Sensei scooping ice cream and there’ll be fixings to share. Say thank you to Sensei and let him know how much we appreciate his dedication and trusted guidance.  

Everyone is welcome to enjoy the tasty treat.

Join Us For Mein Making!

Fall is just around the corner and with Fall comes our annual mein making gathering! This is a time we look forward to every year where the community old and new come together and make a delicious fundraiser. If you have never done it before, don’t worry, we can show you the ropes!

Calling Pie Makers!

After harvesting donated apples in the Fall, we will be organizing a day to make delicious apple pies. The date has yet to be determined, likely the first week in October.

Kokedama

Kokedama (苔玉), meaning “moss ball” in Japanese, is a centuries-old bonsai-inspired art form where a plant’s roots are wrapped in soil and moss instead of a pot.

Join the Calgary Buddhist Temple Sangha Engagement on Saturday, Sept 20 from 1:30pm-3:30pm to learn the tips and tricks to construct our own living artwork, and then walk through the process step-by-step to create beautiful, unique plants to take home.

NOTE: This workshop is NOT at the Temple but ONSITE at Plant Plant: 2501 Alyth Road SE

The workshop includes:

  • Step-by-step guide to creating and caring for a Kokedama
  • Dish to display your Kokedama
  • String to create a hanging Kokedama
  • Tips and tricks for indoor plants
  • All supplies (plants, moss, soil & decorative materials to create 2x Kokedama, indoor plant information booklet, care instructions)
