Board of Directors

The board is committed to adhering to the vision, mission and the philosophies of the Temple. The board responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing day-to-day activities, special events and projects
  • Managing financial activities including fundraising and ensuring appropriate financial reporting.
  • Management oversight of the resident minister.

Some of the major projects the board is working on are: creating a new temple website, Feasibility study and planning work for undertaking renovations of the temple and hosting the Jodo Shinshu World Women’s Convention in 2015.

The board is small but an active, working board. We invite you to come out and get involved by participating and/or volunteering at various activities and events.

Dr Lester Ikuta, President
Lester has been a life long member of the JSBTC and has been a member of the Calgary Buddhist Temple since moving to Calgary in 1970.  He married his wife Mickey in the present temple location in 1987, and with his 3 children have been active members.

Lester Ikuta has served continuously on the board for over 25 years.

Lester has been a board member of this temple continuously since 1985 and is currently in his 4th term as president.  He is practicing as a full time dentist in his busy south Calgary practice.  When he is not practicing, he has volunteered his time from coaching both hockey and lacrosse to helping other non-profit and for-profit organizations.   His hobbies include skiing, hockey, golfing, and especially traveling.

Laura Sugimoto, Vice President
Laura and her husband Tom have been members of the Sangha for over 30 years.  She has been a Board member for six years and is currently chairing the Board’s Building Committee.  She is a senior commercial lawyer and has extensive experience volunteering in non-profit organizations in Calgary.

Ken Nishi, Secretary
Ken and his wife Mary have been members of the Sangha for over 20 years. Their three children have attended Dharma school and participated in many of the Temple activities and events.  Ken has been on the temple board as secretary for the last 10 years and is currently a member of the volunteer committee.

Doug Cruikshank, Treasurer
Long Term member Doug has stepped into this important role for the second time, assisting us generously when a need developed unexpectedly – he will stay to assist throughout our busy initiative year of 2014 and early 2015 at least.

Doug Hironaka, Director
Doug has served on the board since May 2010. He has been a life long member of the Calgary Buddhist Temple. He works as a graphic designer in Calgary and is involved in the temple’s communication committee.

Jackie Robb, Director
Jackie Robb was born into and raised in the Sangha of the Raymond Buddhist Church. She and Barrie were married before the beautiful shrine which is now part of the Glenbow Museum.
After many years of living in cities where there was no Jodo Shinshu Temple, we are happily settled in Calgary where Jackie is honoured to have become a member of the JSBTC Board.

Charlene Wright, Director
Charlene Wright came to the Calgary Buddhist Temple in 2004. She and her son have participated on and off since then in Sunday services and volunteer opportunities; gaining a sense of community and acceptance by getting to know the Sangha. She loves the chanting and takes refuge in the calming effect of thinking about Buddha. She has served on the board since July 2015. Her other interests are neuroscience, walking in the mountains, and she does a little gardening.

Mickey Ikuta, Director
Mickey been a member for over 30 years and have been involved in various capacities ranging from Dharma school coordinator to Renovations committee member. Currently she works with the fundraising committee and also joined the board this year. In her personal life she works in non-profit sector, most recently as a project coordinator at the Women’s Centre of Calgary.

Yuko (Lilian) Ono, Director
Yuko (Lillian) Ono became a member of the Temple in 2008 when she and her family moved to Calgary from Japan. She is honoured to be a board member since 2016.
