Furoshiki Workshop

A more sustainable (and beautiful) way to wrap!  The Calgary Buddhist Temple Sangha Engagement is pleased to organize this in-person workshop on Sunday, Jan 29/23 at 1pm which will be held at the Temple and will be taught by a local business, Nanao Kimono (www.nanaokimono.com). Nanao Kimono is a Japanese lifestyle shop in Kensington full of an assortment of treasures brought from Japan, including towels, tableware, tea and soaps.

Cost of the workshop is $30 per person which includes a furoshiki along with green tea and light refreshment. Maximum registration is 10 people but if this workshop is full, another class may be offered.

Furoshiki is where art meets sustainability – using decorative fabrics to wrap gifts, packages, and for other purposes, the furoshiki offers an earth-friendly alternative.  It has been used for hundreds of years for a great many uses. The Word “Furo” translates to “bath”, and “shiki” means “to spread out”. Originally, they were used to wrap up sacred and important items at temples or shrines, then later were adopted for carrying personal items to and from the public bathhouse. More recently, Furoshiki became very popular as a simple handbag, grocery bag, and especially, as a reusable gift wrapping!

The Temple will be providing lunch service on two Sundays – Nov 13 & 20.  Ten volunteers will be required per lunch service and the minimum age is 16 years old.

The Calgary Buddhist Temple Sangha Engagement is proud to host this intriguing online presentation by retired Sensei James Martin on Sunday, Oct 23rd at 1pm mountain time.

Our current lifestyle provides us with one of the highest standards of living with few exceptions. We enjoy all the comforts, conveniences, leisure time and necessities of life in abundance. Yet many of us remain in the eternal loop of thinking more will be better.  With all the ‘progress’ humanity has made, have we may be forgot our ‘natural’ place in nature to our own detriment?  Could reconnecting with that world be a path for finding that sweet spot we seek?

Join James and the Sangha in exploring a Buddhist perspective of our connection to nature and the benefits of such a practice.  Everyone is welcome!
